Bennet DSCC Rumors Recirculate

  • by: Colorado Pols

Politico:

Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet has been offered the DSCC chairmanship post and discussed the possibility with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Monday, a Senate aide confirmed to POLITICO.

Bennet was offered the post, which is currently held by Sen. Patty Murray, late last week, and is considering it, a different source familiar with the discussions said.

Bennet’s name has been among four that have been floated publicly as possibilies – Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse are the others.

On November 12th, 2010, we wrote a post titled Bennet To Head DSCC? where we discussed Sen. Michael Bennet’s brief but very good record with fundraising and high-level strategy–further experience with which he gained as a close advisor to President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign this year. Bennet declined the DSCC chair then, but naturally, having the head of the DSCC in-state would be a boost for Sen. Mark Udall’s re-election effort in 2014.

  1. He would be terrific at it.  He is ready for a leadership position, very tied in to strategy and fundraising, and well-respected.

There are pros and cons for him personally, but he’d have help from a lot of people.

  2. but he’ll probably need all the help he can get in ’14. We’re not blue-blue yet.

(Question to Pols: That last sentence–is that “boost from” or “boost to“? [which is how I read it])

  3. Especially to help Udall. We’ll do fine in 2014 if we can get the voters who mainly come out just for the big presidential extravaganza to be just as excited about handing the reins to Obama in his final two years with a Dem Senate and Dem House.  Naturally with Obama and the Dem leadership having demonstrated that they’ve learned the hard lessons of his first two years.

The new voters who tasted success voting for him for the first time this year in their first election need to be energized for the midterm and for that to happen they need to see Obama and the Dems doing more tough, brave negotiating and less coughing up our lunch money.

Also great fund raising and organization.  With Bennett, we can count on both.

    1. either politico or RCP, about the success GOP had nationwide, especially in large states with gerry mandering during apportionment. Eg they grabbed 13 of 18 House districts in PA. We may be hard pressed to take back the House before 2020

      1. but it could be possible. Just look at some of the last remaining too close to call races. Last I heard four seats are still up for grabs this time.  In two years demographics may give us a chance in enough districts even in the face of gerrymandering.

  4. Wall St., the MPAA, etc. knows he will always vote their interests and so they will trust him to funnel their money to candidates who will also represent their interests first. He should be a very successful fundraiser.
