Great editorial in The Nation dated 7Oct13.
"What Obama has to do to end the shutdown"
The sledgehammer message has to be zero concessions to a minority within the minority. It is imperative that the attempt of the republicans to "govern by other means" be met with steel and resolve, When you let the losers of 5 of the last 6 elections, people that have no business in government, run the government into the ground by means of extortion and threat of world economic collapse, you set the United States on a course from which it cannot recover any time soon.
The "debt deniers" are now being lectured by, of all people, the Koch brothers. The republican party is in retreat, disarray, and bickering. Any outcome other than unconditional surrender of the bag 40 and boehner announcing a clean bill will be seen as a weakness by future republican seditionists.
A great read.
What a surprise, Republicans are getting even less popular:
http://tablet.olivesoftware.com/Olive/Tablet/DenverPost/Default.aspx
But, the good news is that they're doing their very best, even at this late date, to become even more unpopular:
"Budget negotiations broke down on Saturday — just days before the nation reaches its borrowing limit — as angry Republicans said that President Obama had rejected their latest offer.
“It’s now up to the Senate Republicans to stand up,” said Representative Raúl R. Labrador of Idaho after House Republicans left a closed-door meeting in the Capitol.
The message from Speaker John A. Boehner had been grim, Republicans said. Representative John Carter of Texas described Mr. Obama as “acting like a royal president.”
“He’s still ‘my way or the highway,’ ” Mr. Carter said."

"Republicans in the Senate are expected to block on Saturday a bill by President Barack Obama's Democrats to increase the U.S. debt limit through 2014, a senior congressional aide said."

Apparently, there's no stupid like monstrously, virulently contagious stupid . . .
What? Obama still unwilling to concede, er, "negotiate"?
Conservative House members outright rejected the Collins' plan and were skeptical it would pass the Senate, let alone the House.
"The idea that Susan Collins can dictate what happens in the Senate is kind of silly," Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kansas) said. "They can negotiate all day long, but obviously at the end of the day it has to pass the House."
Fleming said the plan was dead on arrival in the House. "They're not going to get that, because we're not going to support it," he said.
UPDATE: 2:05 p.m. — Senate Democratic leadership rejected the Collins plan Saturday afternoon. A senior Democratic aide said the proposal is pretty unpopular among most Democrats, for two reasons: It locks in the current level of sequestration, minus another $20 billion in 2014, and it makes changes to Obamacare.
"Why would Dems ever support that?" asked the aide. "It's crazy that it got this far."
The tes party, including moke coffman, have disgraced and betrayed the nation. They should be attested umder the patriot act and sent to gtmo.
Kudos on a reasonable & measured response that stays true to our democratic system and the rule of law. {that was sarcasm}
"Governing by other measns" isn't "staying true to our democratic system and the rule of law".
The minority within the minority is on the verge of causing a cataclysm both here and around the world. boehner refuses to allow a clean vote. Why? If he did his job and didn't come up with 18 republicans to go with 200 Democrats, he could actually tell the President he doesn't have the votes and needs concessions. Meanwhile, the quivering cowards within the republican establishment in the House aren't even committing to a Discharge Petition. So yeah, I can see how a case can be made for "Gitmo for goehmert"
As it is, Ray Springfield has a pretty valid point. This is sedition. As well as extrotion. It's republicans, both teabag and country club, willing to bring down the country (knowing that no matter what harm they cause, how many people suffer, they'll get paid!) over………..yep, this is the crux………the President isn't completely white.
Thier racism, and that of thier constituents', isn't the country's problem. It's a sickness they need to address. But they've made it our problem.
Ray Springfield is accurate on this one. At some point, you have to draw the line.
What I would do if I was the Republicans.
Why? The more I read about this the more it looks like they have fundamental problems with the design of the sign-up system. Those problems can't be fixed in weeks. And if they use the consultants who usually work on government contracts, they can't be fixed in months, or even years.
What they tried to create is arguably the most complex business IT system ever (CBMS is nothing compared to this). They did it using the companies and workers who excel at winning government contracts. The system created may not be fixable, but instead will need to be re-written.
If the Obamacare sign-up is a trainwreck, the Democrats better pray that the Republicans stick with short extensions so everyone's attention is focused on the economy held hostage.
David, you seem to think everyone in Congress is a computer geek. This is all about their egos. Boehner is tied to the "Can't back down" crowd. So the software is buggy. It's what happens with massive software systems.
Boehner can't get past your point #1. That's all they see. Point #2 isn't worth much if most people get signed up, despite an initially clunky, probably overwhelmed, system. People (and systems) muddle through if they really need to.
Obama said he won't negotiate. The only question is, will he hold the line, or will he take a 90% deal?
The insider backlash for Dems is already getting some buzz. Hopefully, it will have the intended effect of encouraging Obama to wait it out.
And that would be a reasonable, if flawed strategy. The site will be up and functioning sooner or later. People will forget the tough startup and launch once they're getting thier healthcare………in some cases for the first time in thier lives!
But you're assuming the republicans are operating in good faith. You're basing your strategy assuming the republicans want the best for thier constitients and our country.
They don't.
You're thinking 1950-1858 republicans. There aren't any left.
As I was saying, yesterday:
As for me, I won't cancel all those noveans to St. Jude, Saint of the Impossible Causes or quit wearing the garlic necklace until or unless, the government is open, the debt limit raised with a respectble time line, and we all get to sit down to a Thanksgiving Dinner, bought totally with food stampes, if necessary; and the dems stop sending me all those damm emails. – See more at: http://coloradopols.com/diary/50557/whose-waterloo-now#comments
gd those gd republicans.
"If you think the end times are coming, you don't get to vote on the budget, because it doesn't concern you." Thanks, Bill Maher!
Mike Coffman better start applying to receive his 3 government pensions next year — CD6 is sending you a message, Mike:

I watched that exciting game between Penn State and Michigan last night. What a game: come from behind team; multiple overtimes; fumbled balls, missed "sure" field goals and finally Penn State, my favorite, won.
A mirror reflection of exactly what was happening in Washington DC. But, then, I had an awful realization. I didn't know if Penn State represented the Republicans or the Democrats.
I don't know if Brody is going to win in NJ or if NJ is going to be MA 2010 all over again. ….particularly with the Palin endorsement…..the previous candidate that she endorsed….was Ted Cruz.
So, I obviously have nothing constructive to post. I am out of here for a while. See you all in a week…..when we can analyze what happened.
Meet the puppetmasters of the shutdown. Bill Moyers again proving why he is a national treasure.
Eisenhower often said "the plan is nothing, planning is everything." This is really interesting as the individuals do have to put together a proposal, but they are then given the funds with no strings attached and no follow up.
