  1. Here's one for your "faith in the human race" fix.

In Ferguson, thePD responded to FOIA requests for the incident report on the shooting of Michael Brown with an unrelated video purporting to show Brown stealing from a convenience store.

So the community started to get tense again, after Captain Ron Johnson had succeeded in calming things down by actually doing community policing instead of militarized intimidation.  Last night, some looters attacked the convenience store in the police video.

What did the peaceful protesters do? Lined up in front of the store to protect it.

  2. A sobering tale of the "Two Colorados", "Our Detroit – Southeastern Colorado"

Only the critics, and maybe politicians, care about the way things were to justify the way things are. Pueblo as a community gets too lost in comparing what was to admit that Pueblo along with its neighbors are experiencing a different Colorado, closer in problems to Detroit than Denver.

            1. Look, when I want nuance, I'll ask for it.

for now, I want basic simplified voter-speak.

Pueblo either sucks or is great.

I think we can all agree Phoenix bites.

    1. I am afraid the Southeast is sometimes its worst enemy, defeating anyone or any organization that tries to make a difference. I do not know that much about Pueblo but have seen this happen over and over again in other counties that make up the region. One example is the defeat of creating a National Heritage Area by the anti-Agenda 21, Southeast Colorado Private Property Rights and their conspiracy theories

  3. FERGUSON UPDATE 8/16: Governor Nixon called for martial law, a midnight – 5 am curfew.  This was in response to increased looting and unrest. The Ferguson PD is still stalling on providing shooter Officer Darren Wilson's photo or the actual shooting incident report. Citizens are frustrated. Media is confined by law to a "free speech zone". Some journos are still defying the restriction, using smartphones instead of professional cameras.  At midnight after curfew, about 75 protesters are still defying curfew and a heavy rain. New Black Panthers and many other peacekeepers helped to clear the streets before curfew.

At least police are keeping Captain Johnson's promise – no tear gas, no over-militarized response.  Police are still trying to clear the streets to enforce the curfew. Some protesters are moving towards the police line. I think that some people will be arrested tonight.

After curfew, a female officer is trying to communicate with protesters over a megaphone. Because mainstream and new media has been confined to an area away from the police line, twitter is the best source of current information. Tim Pool is reporting for VICE outside the media "safe zone"

These few dozen people are still on the streets defying curfew. They say that they will not go home until they see the incident report on the shooting, and see the shooter's face, and see that he (Darrell Wilson) is charged. It seems like some of the protesters are intoxicated.

If you want to know what the protesters are up against, read the racist comments on all these twitter feeds. As fast as these are blocked or deleted, new ones appear.

    1. CORRECTION:  Not martial law, just curfew. But a confrontation between 200 or so hard-core protesters and police is in process. http://new.livestream.com/timcast/events/3295551

Tim Pool says that press is a good portion of that 200 people. Apparently, people felt that getting the story was within their first amendment rights. Pool says the crowd is 60% press.

Police announcement (at 49:00) You are defying the state-imposed curfew. Failure to comply peacefully may result in arrest or other actions.

Crowd ignores this. Journalists are still observing and recording. But many are dispersing. Pool says at 52:00 that there are only a few (5-10) activists are left, getting on their knees in the roadway. There are some legal observers with them.

Tear gas fired at 55:00. Police announce: Tear gas in the area. Leave immediately. Journos and others leave under the gas barrage. A protester threw a molotov cocktail, causing a fire at the "Chop Suey" store. Protesters stomped the fire out. Good for them.

Huge clouds of gas. rubber bullets. (57:00) CNN reports it is smoke canisters, not tear gas.

At 1:03, street looks almost clear. Still about a dozen protesters on the street.

      1. unless the Open Record Act in MO covers photos. Seems that the photo showing the purported injury to Wilson might be part of the incident report

          1. That he's a public servant, who shot a member of said public several times in the back, when said member of the public was not presenting a threat. He doesn't get more "protection" than the deceased does.

What exactly are you basing the standard of legitimate use on?

            1. Well, he ought to be arrested on probable cause of homicide, and jailed until he gets his day in court or bonds out, as most others would face.  Then his mug shot WOULD be public record.

                1. Really?  If you shoot someone fleeing it is likely murder, at least some manner of lesser homicide.  Many people-certainly any black man–would have been arrested and awaiting arraignment from behind bars.

                  1. Relax, I"m on your side, here. I'm just talking about the law, and how it will most likely be used to Wilson's benefit.  The defense will most likely be that Brown struck Officer Wilson, which is a felony. Thus, he would have been justified in using deadly force against a fleeing felon.     I don't agree with it, but that's probably what you're going to hear.

                    1. What you could see the veins bulging in my forehead thru the intertubz?  I'm feeling relaxed, I just think he ought to be arrested until he goes to court like most other Americans would.

          2. Gray: legitimate reason? They let the guy leave the city, probably taking physical evidence on his person with him.

The KKK is already raising money for this guy's defense. No cop in Ferguson has ever been charged for excessive force, and if not for the publicity in this case, this guy probably wouldn't, either.

In any other legit police investigation, Wilson's name and photo would have been released within 24 hours.  Social media , including myself, are doing the job that the police department itself should have done. They should have been sharing this information as soon as they had it. So yeah, I'll help fill that abyss, and if it's not professional enough, too f-in bad.

And if that's not "Legit" enough for you, put it down to curiousity. Inquiring minds wanted to know what the looked like. So far, he's fitting right into my stereotypes.

            1. I probably should have asked if there was a legit reason rather than stating there was not. Yet, I still am not reading one here. I believe the guy is guilty of excessive force myself, yet I'd hate to see his phot used for hunting him down.

KKK may well use him to raise $ and hatred. That doesn't even mean he is a racist. Most likely he is subject to a lack of sufficient training common in small town police departments

              1. I wouldn't worry so much about Officer Wilson's safety. The vast majority of the violence in this situation has been perpetrated by the people with badges.

  4. NY Daily News sleuths stalked family FB photos, published this photo of Darren Wilson, Ferguson PD shooter of 18-year old Mike Brown. He looks like I thought he would.

The journos broadcasting live feeds reported that the few remaining protesters on the streets an hour after the curfew were arrested.  I think that the police, under the command of Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson, showed good judgment and restraint tonight.

  5. Local news: I can report AFP is on the ground in Lakewood and Golden this weekend, door to door knockers. "Can you spend five minutes to help save the country?"

Push polling on Udall, literature to hand out, etc. Notably the woman did identify herself as being wih Americans for Prosperity, to her credit. Probably speeds up her process; goodness knows it made her visit with me pretty short.

    1. With a order of "Release the hounds" and open the molten lava pit surrounding the sidewalk and about  9 feet clearance between the sidewalk and the street, I hope…

But a simple slam in the door on her face after saying "Fuck off, Kochwhore." sounds good to me too.

  6. The dead boy, Michael Brown, had a video of himself supposedly stealing from a convenience store broadcast around the world, although it had no relevance to his death. The spectacle of his dead body lying on the street for hours has also been seen around the world, regardless of what this must be doing to his grieving family.

Relative to that, I see no harm in publishing the photo of this cleancut young man accepting an award. The Ferguson PD already took care of Wilson's safety by moving him out of town and probably assigning him bodyguards. He was allowed to leave town without, as far as anyone knows, submitting any forensic evidence, which is going to make conviction difficult.

Hopefully, the FBI is interviewing him rigorously. I suspect that having to watch his back the rest of his life, and possibly losing his job as a police officer, are the most severe consequences Wilson will get for his actions.

    1. Losing his job? He ought to be thrown in the slammer for the rest of his natural life without any chance of parole, and in General Population, no protection at all.

Based on what I saw in the videos (and there has been a lot) – Brown paid for his rellos (clerk was carrying his cash), and tried to leave – but i think the issue was ID so the manager doesn't get into trouble for losing his license for selling to minors (which Brown wasn't, obviously).

The whole kerfuffule could be avoided if the manager wasn't stupid.

  7. Buddhist monks came from Tibet to Ferguson, Missouri, to plead for peace and calm. They are standing in front of the Quick Trip store, which has become a locus of protest.
