Republican chair's praise for stem cell research puts him at odds with Coffman

(Oh really? – Promoted by Colorado Pols)

houseforgopchairOn a couple of ocassions, Colorado GOP Chair Steve House has stated publicly that Rep. Gorden Klingenschmitt doesn’t speak for the Republican Party. Last week, for example, after Rep. Gorden Klingenschmitt called Allah a “false god,” House told 9News:

“House: Representative Klingenschmitt has a Constitutional right to free speech,” House wrote in a statement. “However, as I’ve said several times in the past, Gordon does not speak on behalf of our Party, and his hurtful words do not represent our values.”

Last week on KNUS 710-AM’s “Rush to Reason,” House addressed a number of topics, and he came out in support of stem cell research, a view that’s also not shared by all in the GOP.

Stem cells are obtained from zygotes, or fertilized human eggs. Some Republicans, including Colorado Rep. Mike Coffman, want to ban stem cell research because they consider zygotes to be a human life, even if the zygotes are obtained from fertizilization clinics that would otherwise dispose of them. (Even “pluripotent stem cells,” which are sometimes used in research and are derived from adult stem cells, are grown using embryonic stem cells for comparison purposes.)

As 9News reported in 2013: “This year, Congressman Coffman was asked point blank by Colorado Right to Life, ‘Will you oppose any research or practice that would intentionally destroy the tiniest living humans, embryonic stem cell research?’ With a pen he wrote, ‘Yes.’”

On the radio Sept. 22, House included stem-cell research as part of an “optimistic view of technology” that should be part of the “GOP message.”

House: I think the next decade and a half will be the greatest decade of innovation in American history. Just reading recently about stem cell research. And how they can create brain cells. They’re trying to deal with Alzheimer’s. A lot of people don’t realize that Alzheimer’s is a $174,000 cost to manage an Alzheimer’s patient. And cost is not the major factor.

Host John Rush: But the cost is there.

House: It’s such a tough disease. They’ve figured out how to have stem cells create brain cells. So now they are doing testing on brain cells created by stem cells, so they can try to figure out drugs to slow down the progression of the disease. And $174,000 for a lifetime cost and rising, Alzheimer’s by itself could bankrupt America flat-out because of aging. So there’s some really amazing stuff going on right now with technology that we haven’t talked about. It’s advancing so fast that we could do a radio show almost every week and we wouldn’t not keep up.

Steve House on KNUS 710-AM’s Rush to Reason, with John Rush, Sept. 22, 2015

  1. Who the hell does Steve House think he is? There's no consensus within the party on this issue. He needs to stick to the script.

Actually, House needs to resign. This is just another reason why.

            1. I come back here day after day to tell the truth. I don't care about your stupid insults. They drive away other conservatives but not me. I intend to keep coming back to tell the truth: not for you but for everyone who reads this biased site and doesn't comment.

    1. Who the hell does Steve House think he is?

He is the duly elected chair of the Colorado Republican Party. And he has his First Amendment right to open his mouth come what may out of it. Frankly, I prefer some of the stuff coming out of House's mouth to the crap coming out of Dr. Chap's pie hole, but that's a just a matter of opinion.

I never understood why you folks had it out for Ryan Call since he led your party to some nice results last November. I understand even less why, after ditching Call with this guy, you've turned on House so quickly.

      1. You're completely wrong about this. If Rick Palacio suddenly came out against abortion, you would call for him to resign from the Democrat Party. many in the Republican Party feel the same about killing children for research. Steve House should not make statements as party chair that a large percentage of his party does not agree with.

If the show was on the other foot you'd agree. But you're a hypocrite, so you don't.

        1. Yet you fully support our foreign aid (your tax dollars) going to Israel (over $100 billion and counting), a country that has one of the most liberal abortion policies in the world and one of the most robust research stem cell research sectors of any developed country – while simultaneously calling for the defunding of Planned Parenthood.

          Your turn.

          1. You're not going to use unrelated issues on me to confuse the point. I won't fall for that.

Steve House needs to toe the line and support the Republican officials he works for.

            1. Abortion in Israel is unrelated to abortion in the US? Who'd have thunk?  How convenient for a situational, pro-birther like yourself.

As was mentioned earlier, House is your duly-elected chair.  I'm sure he's shaking in his boots as he reads your words, "needs to toe the line…"

            2. It's just odd, modster, that everything you hate Obama and Dems for doesn't bother you at all coming from Israel and Netanyhu. You want us to hate other countries with policies that are really much more simililar to Republican policies. But here we have a country with a top down government controlled economy, including strict top down price controls, single payer universal healthcare, pretty much unfettered freedom of reproductive choice including abortion on demand within the state funded healthcare system, government funded stem cell research, a military that had no problem integrating gays long before it was ever attempted, much to your dismay, here and this is your hands down favorite allied country with Netenyahu as your hero.

Trust me, it takes very little effort to confuse someone capable of villifying Obama, Dems and Plannned Parenthood while lionizing Netanyahu and Israel despite far more lefty Israeli state policy on choice, healthcare and the economy than anything ever dreamed of by the Obama administration or the Dems in Congress.

Who even needs to try to add to the confusion of those feeling undying devotion to a nation as or more socialist than any of our European allies while demonizing as an evil socialist anyone here in the US who suggests that privatizing everything under the sun may not be the answer.

You're obviously as thouroughly confused as it's possible to be with no help from mean people at Pols.

        2. Rick P might say that he has a personal opposition to abortion, but is not in favor of enshrining his religious beliefs in public policy. Like Ritter did. Highly unlikely, in either case. But you guys do love your hypotheticals.

Steve House's stem cell opinion is in line with what most Americans believe, which Pols mentioned earlier.
