  1. On the otherhand the 2 term – I’ll holdout for a 3rd if I lose – Mayor also believes the climate is changing.

Many will say that sounds like a fish out of water position.

So is it getting colder or warmer or is it just getting more climatey changey?

    1. warmer as a whole (climate), the variance and changes of which cause things like rain, snow, drought…that’s called ‘weather.’

‘Weather’ is also a TV program that your mommy watches before she dresses you for the bus in the morning.

          1. This is ‘tad – he’ll regurgitate whatever mindless soundbite or blog post he finds on the web.

They have to be short and mindless, since he can’t spend too much time away from his Dwarf Fighter character on World of Warcraft.

        1. having suffered through many of your posts, however, I realize that you are likely just stupid.  As has been pointed out (get a globe to walk through this):

Washington DC is on the top half of the globe–this is called the ‘northern hemisphere.’

In the northern hemisphere, in February, the season is a time of year called ‘winter.’

In winter, precipitation (you might know it as ‘wa wa’) that falls from the sky, depending on a wide range of climatic and weather variables, is often frozen.  Frozen ‘wa wa’ is also known as ‘ice.’

Ice crystals, in the right conditions, form crystals.  These are called ‘snow flakes.’  A lot of these flakes is called a ‘snow storm.’  Snow storms often result in ‘accumulation.’   That is when the frozen ‘wa wa’ piles up.

As difficult as it is to get your pea-sized brain to accept, all these phenomena are predicted to occur in ‘winter’ in the northern hemisphere.

          1. Just because it snows in winter is not contradicting climate change… The AMOUNT it snows PROVES climate change.

the record depth of snow cannot be disputed. from years of observation… oh yeah thats scientific evidence the conservatives do not believe.

go pop some more quietus libertad.

            1. But why act like an adult and form positions on reality, when you can live in a fantasy land where snow in the winter (that behaves in a manner which reinforces what we know about climate change, rather than refutes it) means that the weight of science is wrong?

        2. Climate change (a gradual global warming) destabilizes existing atmospheric and hyrdospheric patterns and causes extreme weather events (such as more, and more frequent, hurricanes, blizzards, and so on). While no individual extreme weather event can be attributed to climate change, if you do mobilize such events as evidence, then it makes more sense to mobilize them as evidence in support of climate change, since they have long been predicted by climate change models.

People on this site have actually gone to the trouble of running through the causal chains of climate change models to demonstrate how such things happen, and how even some localized medium-term cooling is predicted to be one of the consequences of global warming.

They, and I, have also run through the enormous amount of both empirical and theoretical evidence supporting the fact that global warming is a reality. Much of the empirical evidence, in fact, was predicted before it was found, due to our previous knowledge that increasing CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere should, according to what we knew at the time, would create a greenhouse effect.

Oddly enough, you’ve never addressed any of this information, not the empirical evidence, not the debunking of your conflation of weather with climate.

          1. sure CT understands that…

However it must be dumbed down for conservative republicans.

like they did not pay attention in Kindergarten.

            something like,

“When you heat a pot of waa waa enough it turns to steam. after it rises into the air, that waa waa cools it becomes clouds. when the clouds come in contact with particles and cools enough. the waa waa condenses into rain droplets. in winter those rain droplets become frozen and fall as snow flakes.

            thus

the more heat applied to the oceans evaporates into the atmosphere and then produces more snow/rain than otherwise.

            got it libertad?

    2. Time: 25 minutes

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, more for greasing pan and for drizzling

2 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, (8 ounces each)

1 teaspoon kosher salt, more to taste

      Freshly ground black pepper

1 teaspoon curry powder, more to taste

7 ounces oyster mushrooms, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

      2 tablespoons fresh chopped basil

      2 garlic cloves, minced

2 scallions, white and light green parts only, thinly sliced.

      1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Grease a baking sheet with olive oil. Place each breast flat on cutting board. With knife held parallel to surface, cut breast in half. Transfer chicken to baking sheet and season well with a large pinch each of salt, pepper and curry powder. Drizzle chicken with a little oil.

      2. In a bowl, toss mushrooms with curry powder, salt, basil, garlic, scallions and 2 tablespoons oil.

      3. Spoon an equal amount of mushroom mix on each piece of chicken. Bake until mushrooms are golden and chicken is cooked through, 15 to 20 minutes.

      Yield: 4 servings.

    3. Do you believe that AGW poses no risk to us?  And if you do believe we face no risk, can you tell me what you have read that has led you to that conclusion?  (Sorry, that’s two questions but you can handle it.)

I’m not going to insult your intelligence about this.  I really want to know: if you’ve actually read the science on this issue, how have you come to the conclusion that we face no risk to climate change?  If you discount risk because of politics instead of because of actual research done on the issue, then my next follow up would be: in what other areas of your life do you turn over risk management questions to politics rather than research into the risk?

I’ll turn it around for you: even though I think Darth Cheney is the worst thing that was ever blighted upon the American people, I still believe that we face risk of terrorism.  I don’t discount the risk just because I think the politics of terrorism is fucking stoopid.

  2. You know its bad for the Democrats when 42 year old – 8 term Congressman and lifelong Prince of the Political Class – “Patches” Kennedy – throws in the towel.

Kennedy could cite absolutely no reason for “his decision” to quit.

Taking no questions, he stated in his abdication speech that it had been a difficult few years for many people and illness had taken its toll.

Interestingly, Barron X shed some light on the exit.  http://coloradopols.com/diary/

    1. …doesn’t mean I won’t continue putting my virtual foot up your ass.

Quick question for you, if you can take a break from your latest quest on World of Warcraft – which party has more retirements from both Houses of Congress – Repub or Dem?

      http://voices.washingtonpost.c

Wow – 14 GOP Representatives are “dropping like flies” this year. So what’s wrong? Is it that bad a year for the Republican’t Party?

    2. Time: 25 minutes

6 boneless, skinless chicken cutlets (about 1 1/4 pounds total)

      Kosher salt

      Freshly ground black pepper

      2 large egg whites

      2 tablespoons cornstarch

      1 tablespoon chopped parsley

      2 teaspoons minced garlic

      Dijon mustard

1 1/2 ounces thinly sliced provolone cheese (1 1/2 slices)

      1 1/2 ounces thinly sliced ham (1 1/2 slices)

3 tablespoons sauerkraut, packed, more for serving

      3/8 teaspoon caraway seeds

      2 cups plain bread crumbs

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, for frying.

      1. Season chicken lightly with salt and pepper. In a bowl, whisk together the egg whites, cornstarch, parsley and garlic until lumps dissolve and mixture is slightly foamy. Set aside.

      2. Brush one side of each chicken cutlet with mustard. Divide cheese and ham among 3 cutlets and place on mustard side. Top each with 1 tablespoon sauerkraut and 1/8 teaspoon caraway seeds. Arrange remaining 3 cutlets mustard-side down on top of sauerkraut to sandwich the ham and cheese. Press to seal.

      3. Dip stuffed cutlets in egg white mixture and dredge in bread crumbs. (You can do this several hours ahead and refrigerate until needed).

      4. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Carefully place cutlets in hot pan and fry until dark brown and cooked through, 2 to 3 minutes a side. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain; serve hot, with additional sauerkraut on the side.

      Yield: 3 servings.

  3. What creates morons?

State Rep. Spencer Swalm seems intent to inflame these days, tossing out provocative bon mots on the House floor, in committee hearings and on the Twitter. The Centennial Republican on Monday railed against a bill aimed at easing tax burdens on low-income families.

“Don’t have kids out of wedlock,” Swalm said from the House floor. “If you’re married, if at all possible, try to stay married. Those are ways to lift your family out of poverty.”

That was Monday. He tweeted the same thoughts Thursday.

“Dems got mad when I truthfully stated that out of wedlock births causes chilhood [sic] poverty. Voters are saying RIGHT ON!”

Swalm, done offending poor on the House floor, takes to the Twitter

    1. He doesn’t explore WHY women have children out of wedlock.  This is one issue which the Palins are perfectly equipped to deal with and they should.

IMHO and based on lifelong experience, one reason women have children out of wedlock is that Medicaid will pay for prenatal care, and will continue to provide medical coverage for mother and child(ren).  Our current safety net provides NO incentive for parents to marry; quite the contrary, it provides disincentives.

  4. Colorado may finally have a leader in the top echelon of Congress:

    COVER STORY

Five House Democrats Ready To Step Up

They form a second tier of leaders-in-training who could be in line to take over when their top party chiefs either retire or are forced out.

    by Richard E. Cohen

    Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010

A new generation of savvy House Democrats has emerged to take on key political and policy assignments for Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Five of the most visible rising stars are Chris Van Hollen, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Joseph Crowley, Xavier Becerra, and Diana DeGette.

      1. He might be “pursuing” it, but it’ll be years before that results in an actual leadership post. He is pursuing the influence track quite successfully.

  5. Ingredients

    •  Four 6- to 8-ounce boneless, skinless  chicken breasts

    •  1 teaspoon salt

    •  1/2 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper

    •  2 tablespoons olive oil

    •  2 tablespoons chopped shallot

    •  1 cup dry white wine

    •  1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

    •  1/2 cup heavy cream

    •  1 teaspoon chopped fresh tarragon

    •  1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley

    Cooking Directions

Season the chicken on both sides with the salt and white pepper. Heat the olive oil in a 12-inch sautГ© pan over medium-high heat.

Place the chicken in the pan, and cook until golden, about 5 minutes per side.

Increase the heat to high, add the shallot and white wine, and cook for 4 minutes, with saute lid on. Remove the chicken and set it aside on a serving plate.

Whisk the mustard and heavy cream into the pan, and bring the sauce to a boil. Then reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 2 minutes, until thickened and bubbly.

Add the tarragon and parsley, and remove from the heat. Spoon the sauce over the chicken, and serve immediately.

      1. That I got in a Craig Claiborne cookbook.

It’s VERY good.  Only difference is that Craig’s had no tarragon and used butter for the frying (the book was written before his heart attack).

You can make it with veal too.  Scallopini pounded thin in 1″ to 2″ slices.

  6. Remember the 10 Americans who were detained in Haiti for attempting to take a number of children across the border into the Dominican Republic?  Their case took an apparently darker turn with this NY Times story:

The police in El Salvador have begun an investigation into whether a man suspected of leading a trafficking ring involving Central American and Caribbean women and girls is also a legal adviser to many of the Americans charged with trying to take 33 children out of Haiti without permission

A lawyer for the group has already been dismissed after being accused of trying to offer bribes to get the 10 Americans out of jail.

The adviser, Jorge Puello, has been identified through photos as being perhaps the same man wanted for the trafficking charges, and his status as a lawyer has been called into question.

I sincerely hope that, in the end, justice is able to separate out the guilty from those merely duped into whatever scheme (and it does seem to be a scheme, the further along we go…) was being run here.

      1. At present, the thinking is that the 10 can be released if a representative remains in Haiti.

As far as permission, if the parents were duped by false promises, the judge may change his opinion.  Given what little I know right now, I think it likely that at most one or two of the group actually knew something illegal was going on – and that might have been limited to the knowledge that they didn’t have the right paperwork.  But it seems clearer as time goes on that there’s something more to this operation than just a happier place for children in an orphanage in the Dominican Republic.

      2. that it won’t matter what the children’s parents said or didn’t say.  The whole thing sounded fishy from the beginning, and my guess (and that’s all it is) is that at the very least the ringleaders of this group were trying to make a few bucks.  The photos of the “advisor” and child trafficker sure look like the same guy.

  7. KKCO has reported that Scooty’s hometown teabaggers have endorsed Dan Maes.  The Conservative Alliance just does not believe that he is Conservative enough?  Help, Ellie!

“Three or four years from now, we’re not going to have a conversation about jobs and all of that kind of stuff.”  -Scott McInnis

      1. Penry has so little credibility left with the people of western Colorado.  He can’t even convince his hometown teabaggers to support his candidate.  Or is Penry sabotaging the McInnis campaign from the inside so that he can have a shot in 4 years?

“Three or four years from now, we’re not going to have a conversation about jobs and all of that kind of stuff.”  -Scott McInnis

    1. You can write the spin your damned self.

Scooter doesn’t need those people.  He’s going to win the nomination no matter what.  He’s going to win the general by running to the center and calling them extremists.

It doesn’t matter that he’s been courting them and was rejected.  He doesn’t need them one way or the other–just wait for the spin.

      1. “He’s going to win the general”?.  Is that the hope?  Or are you a betting man?

“Three or four years from now, we’re not going to have a conversation about jobs and all of that kind of stuff.”  -Scott McInnis

          1. as a reply to Ralphie’s “spin.”  In case I was too subtle and anyone takes it wrong.

And yes, you have a good point, RG.  If it takes fire and spreads to other teabag groups, it could become a problem this far out.

“Three or four years from now, we’re not going to have a conversation about jobs and all of that kind of stuff.”  -Scott McInnis

            1. Merely saying that McInnis can change direction on a second’s notice.  And it remains to be seen how much anti-Democratic sentiment there is in this state.

I’m going to root for Hick and vote for Hick.  But McInnis is a moving target.
