Buck Attending Steamboat Rightie Conference With Sharron Angle?

  • by: Colorado Pols

We just got a release from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) that frankly surprised us–you may, but probably have not heard about a major conservative strategy conference going on today and tomorrow in Steamboat Springs. Organized by the little-known Steamboat Institute, the “2nd Annual Freedom Conference” features such luminaries on the right as Karl Rove, Grover Norquist, and Yaron Brook of the Ayn Rand Institute–as well as Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle as a featured speaker.

Release follows: what surprises us about this is we were not under the impression that Buck was going to attend this event. Democrats are working earnestly to tie Buck to other prominent Republican figures pegged as “extremist” going into the elections, and Sharron Angle is at the very top of the list. We don’t see any advantage for Buck in appearing at a closed-door right wing conference with her and others on this list, and that’s why we believed previous reports that Buck was giving this conference a wide berth. For starters, can somebody confirm he is really going?

We’ll have more to say, depending on the answer to that question.

TWO PEAS IN A POD: AS ANGLE AND BUCK ATTEND EVENT IN COLORADO WITH KARL ROVE TODAY, DSCC FEATURES THEM IN NEW WEBSITE

New Website Welcomes Ken Buck And Sharron Angle As They Join Extreme Republican Tea Party Candidates Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Joe Miller, And Ron Johnson

See How Extreme Buck And Angle Are At http://dscc.org/teaparty

Today, as extremists Ken Buck and Sharron Angle attend a conservative conference in Steamboat Springs with Karl Rove, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee released “Tea Party Set,” a new interactive website highlighting the six Republican tea party candidates and their extreme, dangerous agenda.  Tea party candidates Rand Paul of Kentucky, Sharron Angle of Nevada, Ken Buck of Colorado, Marco Rubio of Florida, Joe Miller of Alaska and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin are all far outside the mainstream of their states, and all have put forth agendas which would devastate middle class families across the country.

“Extremists Ken Buck and Sharron Angle want to end Social Security and Medicare – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg,” said DSCC National Press Secretary Deirdre Murphy.  “Tea party candidates Buck and Angle join four other right-wing insurgents who are all dangerously outside the mainstream of their states. They are all more intent on imposing their risky social doctrine than on creating jobs and growing the economy, and its why they just aren’t our cup of tea.”

Before clicking over to “Tea Party Set,” learn a little more about the extreme tea party candidates below.

·         Rand Paul of Kentucky has spent months walking away from his record and who he really is. A month after saying the Civil Rights Act shouldn’t apply to private business and refusing to say he would have voted in favor of the Civil Rights Act, Paul backtracked on his positions, saying the federal government was right to impose civil rights on private business. Paul committed the same politically expedient move after he defended BP after the oil spill, calling criticism of the company “Un-American.”  Under fire for his remarks, Paul went back on his comments, saying government regulations of offshore drilling were not adequate. Paul has also gone into hiding with the media, refusing to conduct interviews and forcing journalists to submit all questions in writing despite “offering detailed answers on just about any topic during his primary campaign.”  Paul recently held a fundraiser in Washington DC with the same establishment Republicans he railed against on the campaign trail and has said the drug problem in eastern Kentucky is “not a real pressing issue.”

·         Sharron Angle of Nevada won the Republican nomination by appealing to the most fringe elements of her party.  Angle would phase-out Social Security and Medicare, would eliminate the Department of Education, and supports bringing nuclear waste to Yucca Mountain and even turning the site into a nuclear processing plant.  She has been voted Nevada’s worst legislator-twice.  She believes that abortion should be illegal, even in the cases of rape and incest, and thinks that Congress houses “domestic enemies.”  She also believes that unemployed Nevadans are spoiled.

·         Ken Buck of Colorado is far outside the Colorado mainstream.  In addition to proposing repeal of the 17th Amendment, extremist Buck has embraced the radical Tea Party agenda in nearly every way, supporting “birther” legislation, calling for federal student loan programs to be phased out and suggesting the unconstitutionality of Social Security.  Buck is also open to returning to the gold standard, eliminating the Departments of Education and Energy, imposing a national sales tax on Coloradans, doesn’t believe in global warming, and opposes the principle of separation between church and state.  Buck also faces ethical questions regarding his tenure as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

·         Marco Rubio of Florida is the ultimate tea party candidate.  Rubio has fully subscribed to Congressman Ryan’s plan to privatize Social Security, raise the retirement age, and gut Medicare and Medicaid.  Rubio also wants to drill for oil off the coast of Florida and doesn’t believe in climate change.

·         Joe Miller of Alaska would like to “transition out” of Social Security, doesn’t think federal unemployment insurance is “constitutionally authorized,” and told the Anchorage Daily News that he would like to “phase-out” Medicare.  If extremist Joe Miller had his way, Social Security as we know it would be gone for 75,000 Alaskans, seniors would no longer be able to rely on Medicare, and Alaskans struggling in this still recovering economy would no longer get assistance as they continue to look for jobs.

·         Ron Johnson of Wisconsin believes that Social Security is a “Ponzi scheme,” and under his proposal to privatize Social Security, Wisconsin senior citizens would be left to fend for themselves in their golden years. Johnson is open to abolishing the federal reserve, and thinks criticism of British Petroleum is an “assault,” while being open to drilling for oil in Lake Michigan.  Recent reports show that Johnson also owns over $100,000 in BP stock.  Johnson also is in favor of completely repealing health care reform, which would reopen the Medicare donut hole, bring back denial of coverage based on preexisting conditions, and throw thousands of Wisconsinites off of health insurance.

          1. although I find that odd that you would be out of the loop on this but you “heard” 10 people signed up with Buck’s campaign to volunteer last night. Seems you have selective access.

              1. Berrick Abramson, Romanoff’s deputy campaign manager, said he didn’t invite Buck and would have asked him not to come if he knew he was stopping by.

Buck’s campaign disputes that and says they received an invitation. Spokesman Owen Loftus says the reception wasn’t all bad – Buck’s people picked up 12 new volunteers from the event, and several people told Buck privately they were going to support him

                1. Hate to break it to you, but anyone who would vote for a man who wants to close the Department of Education, privatize Social Security, and deny rape victims the right to choose, IS NOT A DEMOCRAT.

                  1. Hate to break it to you, there are not that many people out there who would admit to being a democrat.  If Bennet just gets those who will vote this November who admit to being Democrats, he will top out at about 30%.  I think he will do a little better than that, about 40-45% personally.

This November is looking like a blood bath.

        1. Forgive me if I am jaded but Norton had the fix quote a poll that never materialized and if Bennet promised on Wednesday it would be out on Thursday, sure seems suspicious. At the least, he has not kept his word.

      1. Apparantly the reporter, because Buck endorsed Maes and Suthers labeled it as a Unity event.  Other than ColoradoPols nobody has suggested it had anything to do with Norton or that she was invited.

In as much as the polling data (perhaps other then Bennets which he has not yet released, his promises to the contrary) Buck gets a much higher percentage of republicans suporting him than Bennet does of dems so it is unlikely they will feel the need to have such a rally.

I hear more than 10 people at Andrews birthday party signed up to work on Buck’s campaign.  Seems like that unity thing did not work so well for Michael.

Perhaps to know Michael Bennet is not to love him?

            1. 1. Speculation about what the reporter might have been thinking, apparently contradicted by what the reporter actually SAID, and

              2. Buck’s spokesman saying it was a “mistake.” Once again, has Fox 21 confirmed that? Should Pols take down everything a campaign spokesman says is “wrong?” I doubt it.

And you did lie about what the reporter says in the video. You said that “only Pols has suggested” this rally was related to Norton, but that is plainly what the anchor said too. I don’t need to argue reality with you, it’s right in front of my face.

              1. .

While this is unrelated to my intense campaign to oust Doug Lamborn,

my senior Opposition Researcher forwarded this to me for a laugh:

I received it as a forwarded email, and can forward it to someone who’s got teh skilz to post it as it appears in my browser, nifty party logo and all.  The Subject of the email is quite clear: “Unity Rally with Ken Buck”

But what does “Unity Rally” mean ?  To me, it means Jane Norton telling her supporters to now support Ken.  But that is not explicitly stated in the announcement.  Rather, it talks about “we want you to join us [El Paso County Republican Party] in uniting behind [Ken.]”

p.s.: I worked at the Flying W when I was in college, a little.  I used to punch dogies at the location of this rally.

                .

                1. .

there were several Norton supporters at the El Paso County U.S. Senate campaign rally, including Norton’s field director Chuck Broerman, a former El Paso GOP chair.

                  .

                1. You do intentional ignorance very well.

But at the very least, it’s time for you to stop demand a blog correct a TV station for calling it a “unity rally.”

I could pour on more sauce, but you already look like a dumbass.

                  1. And your basis for that belief is?

I am not a Norton fan but everyone criticizing her for not attending something which she appears not likely to have been even invited too, much less was supposed to appear at, is, in my opinion, unfair.

        1. H stand for “hooey”? :*)

Ten disgruntled, short sighted, parochial AR supporters who can’t accept reality. I think the Bennet campaign is shaking in its boots..

        1. Sue Lowden. Honestly thought it was Angle, but you are right H-man.

I like your posts here even though I disagree with most of them.  I hope you don’t disappear after November, and I am not saying that in a sarcastic way.

          1. My older brother, a hardcore Republican/rural Virginian, called me last week to chat.  During said conversation he asked me, verbatim – “who is this dude running for Senate who says he has bullshit on his boots ?”

The comment heard round the world I guess.

        2. So what gives, buddy? Did Buck stop in Steamboat on his way around the state today? Did he drop in to say hi to Karl and Grover and the crew?

If so, why? Does he really love the far right that much?

If not, why not? Aren’t the conservative base his peeps?

Just bringing it back to the topic.

          1. If he spends too much time with Rove he will get accused of coordinating about the millions of dollars of commercials they will be running against Bennet.

Why wasn’t Mikey at Andrew’s Birthday party.  Is he still afraid of Andrew’s supporters?  They yell alot but have yet to really hurt anybody.

            1. and Romanoff wholeheartedly endorsed Bennet.  I guess you had a selective loss of memory about their get together.  You were probably distracted waiting for Jane Nortona or God to bless Ken Buck the anointed one.

Just so you know, Michael Bennet is comfortable around Romanoff supporters and didn’t have to miss 130 days of work to win his party’s nomination.  He spent his time trying to help our country out of the deep deep hole that Bucks predecessors in the Republican Party dug but this one is already in the bag for Ken Buck so you don’t have to be afraid of Michael Bennet do you?  Buck is ahead by about a gazillion points so kick back and relax H-man, you have nothing to worry about.

              1. Betsy is also toast, but they think they can still save a few seats that they are only a few behind in.  Have you heard anything about that?

Has Bennet released the poll showing he was ahead or did he only blow smoke to try to keep some money coming?

                1. You don’t know whats going on with your man crush buddy Ken, sure winner, Buck but you know that Dems are bailing on Bennet.

Well since you know that the Dems. have already surrendered the seat, you can just kick back and enjoy the fall without any effort.  The rest of us dumb Dems. will probably just continue to make calls and talk to folks because we just can’t come to grips with how superior Ken, sure winner, Buck is to our poor out gunned candidate.  Those darn GOTV habits from working for the Obama campaign die hard so please show a little mercy on us dude.  We know that Ken Buck has an absolute lock on voters and there is nothing we can do to prevent his coronation but hey a phone call is free and we learned a few things in 2008 that might keep Bucks victory below 40%.

Thanks for the heads up on what a loser Bennet is.  Oh, I didn’t see your details on what makes Ken, sure winner, Buck qualified to discuss educational issues facing our public schools.

                  1. You made some kind of useless comment about private schools and how Ken, sure winner, Buck is a man of the people for going to public school which qualifies him to decide to eliminate the Department of Education.

So how does Ken, sure winner, Buck coaching football, qualify him to understand the problems facing our educational system?

              2. I wish Bennet would not spend so much time doing his job.  If he’d missed all those votes that drove us deeper and deeper into debt, we’d all be better off.  Plus, if he wasn’t always on the floor asking Schumer how to vote, maybe he’d have time to answer my letters.

Has anyone asked Mikey lately how much that nationalized health bill is going to cost?  I’m hearing it’s not going to drop costs one cent.  Costs are going to increase.  Watch it!

                1. are really coherent. (sarcasm)

I write It often takes weeks for a personal reply. If it has been more than 2 weeks I call the office in DC and his local office and that often prompts.

            2. just a little buzzing gadfly, aren’t you? I think it would have been somewhat awkward for everyone if Senator Bennet had showed up for what was clearly meant to be a big Thanks for The Effort, Folks party for Andrew, and a bit of a fundraiser to help him retire some debt. Rather than it being a slight, as you imply,it showed awareness on Senator Bennet’s part, and large dose of class and civility.

  1. with the other Republican elites who want to eliminate the Department of Education and replace it with a faith based educational system.  I guess Buck wants to have our kids home schooled so we don’t have to pay taxes to support things like schools and teachers.

H-man has gotten in some nasty little digs about how Bennet wasn’t doing anything special on the Senate Education Committee but his candidates totally lacks any expertise in the matter.  Learning to sing “Jesus Loves Him” at the foot of Uncle Ernie isn’t going to make us competitive with the rest of the world.

    1. Let me see Thurston Howell III went to prep school in DC where he was a congressional page. They had really sweet uniforms back then. Wonder if a picture of one will surface in the campaign?

Buck went to public school.  Therefore, Buck is in favor of homeschooling.  Oh, I get it, he coached HS football while he was going to law school at a Catholic High School so that is where you get his “Jesus Loves Him” from.

If I were Bennet, given how his tenure and financial prowess at the Denver Schools was recently skewered, I would stay away from that for a while.

      Just sayin’.

      1. If going to private schools or colleges were a disqualifier and a negative commment about a person, you would have to get rid off much of the Republican leadership, CEOs of the business world, alot of evangelicals..and, oh yeah, Mr. Romanoff,  who seems to capture your approval.

You really aren’t going to start spouting that old conservative nonsense about going to private schools, or wanting to better oneself by going on to college and grad school somehow implies a person lacks character, are you? Really? Why not try Palin’s page..she would “like” you…;*)

        1. The post was in response to smack about Buck wanting to force children to have home schooling. That was nonsense so I replied in kind.

Buck graduated from Princeton undergrad, was law review at the U of Wyoming and taught at DU law school.  I think he has a reasonable basis in intellect and experience to be a US Senator.

      2. You don’t lie often H-man but when you do it is pathetic.

The fact that Bennet went to a private school and was a superintendent for a large public school district should give him a perspective on the the whole spectrum of educational challenges facing our children.

The fact that he made mistakes while at DPS goes with the territory when you try to do things.  Someone once said “Show me someone who has never made a mistake and I’ll show you someone who has never done anything”.  I would bet you haven’t made any mistakes in your life H-man.  When people learn from their mistakes they end up being better and it wasn’t like no one else misread the markets either.  From the homeowners who bought at the top of the housing bubble to the Republican Wall Street bankers there were plenty of mistakes made.  What I liked about Bennet’s take on educational reform is that he wants the less affluent schools to have 21st century tools like computers and the Internet so kids can take online classes and be part of bigger groups.  He has been involved in developing ways to move our traditional education systems forward.  I’ll take his experiences including his mistakes in regards to education reform any day over someone who can’t decide whether to get rid of the Department of Education or not.

        1. Other than whether the education reforms are top down, from fed to states, or are generated locally, I don’t see any difference on where Bennet or Buck come from on Education.  Buck’s kids recently went through public school in Colorado, one is a senior at West Point, the other a soph at Clemson.  Painting him as unaware or unsympathetic to public education is not justified.

I am not all over Bennet for his performance at the Denver Public Schools, and yes I have and continue to make plenty of mistakes, but I still would not lead with his DPS experience because he got killed by Romanoff about it.

      3. The trend in the Republican Party is to school the elites and scion of wealth and then dumb down the masses so that they can be easily manipulated and the way to do that is to make a quality education unaffordable except for the privileged few and then push Bible thumping prophecy as the absolute truth.  This is why there is so much anti-science and anti-intellectual propaganda originating from the Republican Party.  They want the minister to tell the people what is true and not the professor.  When people are educated they tend to understand things like facts which support critical issues like Climate Change.  You can see this manipulation of Republican voters by seeing how quickly they went from President Obama being under the sway of Reverend Wright to President Obama being a Muslim.  Republican politicians want an electorate that will believe anything they say no matter how outrageous and to get to that point they need to limit education.  It is my opinion that Republicans are basically anti-education and would prefer that people were home school using nothing but the Bible.

        1. Bennet got a mil or so from PACs.

          Norton 500K.

          Buck got 2 or 3K.

So he is the Republican elite?  He is going to go to the NRSC for policy advice?  All the Republican elected officials in Colorado and ever Republican elected Senator, except for Jim DeMint, backed his opponent so he owes them what?

To understand why the individual Ken Buck appreciates public education you need a little background.  Ken Buck’s father grew up poor in the depression in Greeley.  Buck’s grandfather had a shoe repair shop.  Buck’s father was one of five kids.

Buck’s father graduated from Greeley High School, now Greeley Central, was admitted to UC Boulder and worked his way through college.  After Pearl Harbor, the then seniors were allowed to graduate early to enlist in the service.

Buck’s father joined the army.  He was discharged at the end of the war as a Captain.  There was a lot of turn over from people getting killed.  But for those that made it, there was the GI bill.

Buck’s father graduated from NYU law school.  He went at night and worked during the day and had the GI bill to thank for his being able to do it.

No, Buck’s father was not the president of a fine private college like Bennet’s, which is a real accomplishment. Buck’s father got everything he had in life because of public education and the GI bill and don’t think for a minute that does not drive Buck’s view of its importance.

The Buck is a Republican so he is against education is nothing, but ignorant.  He recognizes, as do most educators, that the most important factor in education is engaged parents.

Buck is currently getting grief on coloradopols for the earmark he obtained to build a Juvenile Assesment Center in Greeley.  It has helped reduce crime there 50% in the 6 years he has been DA.

Buck meets with the kids and their parents together.  You know what his pitch is to keep the kids on the straight and narrow?  He tells the kids and parents about how much more money the kid will make over the course of their lives if they finish high school and go to college.  Economics sells, not morality.  The parents respond. The kid succeeds.

Does that sound like somebody that doesn’t give a shit about public education?  If you are smart enough to figure out people and what drives them, you know that the Buck is a Republican so he does not care about public education shoe does not fit.  I suspect you now get it.

      4. Where does Princeton educated Ken Buck stand on the Colorado Childrens Amendment (SB 199 2007) that preserved the mill levy to help schools in rural and less affluent districts?  Does he support it or does he want to eliminate it and if he wants to eliminate then what are his alternatives for funding education in less affluent areas of our state?

        1. Longer answer, Buck believes education should be decided at lower levels in the governmental food chain than the federal government and he is running for the US Senate.  I suspect that in the US Senate he would leave that fight to those at the state and school district level.  Buck has spoken about transfering programs to the state level in education, not defunding educational programs.
