Rick Santorum Will Not Be President

  • by: Colorado Pols

Nevertheless, we’ve noted the entry of nominally “major” GOP candidates for the presidency as they have announced, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t in his case–AP reports:

Santorum has been laying the groundwork for months. While the two-term senator lacks the name recognition and fundraising organization of his better-known rivals, he is a favorite among the social conservatives who hold huge sway in some early nominating contests.

“Now, the only test for me is whether we can raise the money that’s necessary,” Santorum told Fox News Channel, where he worked as a contributor until the network put him on leave while he decided whether to enter the race. “We’re going to determine over the next few weeks as to whether the resources are going to be there.”

Santorum, a blunt-talking conservative who once was the No. 3 Senate Republican, has made frequent visits to early-voting states New Hampshire, Iowa and South Carolina. On Thursday, he planned a town hall-style meeting on the economy at New England College in Henniker, N.H…

His policy positions align with conservatives who are looking at many of the expected candidates with hesitation.

Santorum was recently in Colorado to headline a state Republican Party fundraiser with new chairman Ryan Call, as the Colorado Statesman’s Ernest Luning reported last week:

“This was a state that didn’t go quite the way we hoped – it wasn’t just Colorado, it was everything west of the Mississippi,” [Santorum] said. “Would I come into a group that was sort of flat and not energized, or would the fire still be burning?” He said he was happy to see the state GOP’s enthusiasm because, he said, this is a serious time.

“You’re going to be in the center of it – you’re one of those purple states that can swing either way and are going to decide who the next President of the United States is going to be.” And the stakes, Santorum said, couldn’t be higher…

“If we do not win this election and ‘Obamacare’ goes into effect, America as you know it, as you were given it by your parents and grandparents – America will be gone forever,” he said. “That’s what I believe is at stake. America as you know it will be gone.”

Riveting, but probably not enough to get Santorum out of the bush leagues.

  1. What’s that smell?

We shouldn’t have lunch at Denny’s anymore.

    Is John McCain here?

Why do I have to dress to match my doll?

My family said no, but it’s up to me.

      1. but what about his child that died that he brought home to meet the family?

For example, Santorum has six children. In 1996, he had son born prematurely who lived for only two hours. He and wife brought the child home and introduced the dead infant to the rest of their children as ‘your brother Gabriel’ and slept with the body overnight.”

Upon their son’s death, Rick and Karen Santorum opted not to bring his body to a funeral home. Instead, they bundled him in a blanket and drove him to Karen’s parents’ home in Pittsburgh. There, they spent several hours kissing and cuddling Gabriel with his three siblings, ages 6, 4 and 1 1/2. They took photos, sang lullabies in his ear and held a private Mass.

        1. I haven’t. I can’t imagine the level of grief a parent experiences. I can’t imagine what I would do in that situation. And I can’t imagine any decent human being disparaging a family that did what they did.

          1. my family grieve … and I still hurt from the loss of my only brother.  And I hope beyond hope for a safe and healthy life for my sons — I do not want to think of the crushing despair & grief I would ever feel if something befell either one.

But in all the deaths that have occurred within my family I don’t recall nor believe the hospital ever asked, “so, umm, ya wanna take him with ya … and do … whatever?”

I do believe there are some laws on the books regarding the handling of bodies of the deceased.  Yeah, I believe that if even someone dies at home ya can’t just load up in the family truckster and cart ’em off to your local undertaker (at least in almost every urban American city. There are definitely laws on the books about the care & handling & transportation of the dead — regardless of age.

So just dig around a little and see if you find any other POTUS wannabes with one of these little nuggets of “something not right with that” in their history.  I’m open to a show of hands for any & all posters to weigh in on the topic.

            1. In Colorado you can load Grandma in the front seat and drive around. If you do something deemed inappropriate (like dress the corpse in party hats and take pictures – true story) it may be considered illegal.

At any rate, the penalties are usually reflected by the risk to the public. So a baby dying of TB and being driven around would be a big deal. This wouldn’t be treated so harshly.

Everyone’s right here. It is a little creepy and Santorum doesn’t mind telling others they can’t do things he deems creepy. But it’s also not that not normal. It’s only the possible contamination of the living that stopped this kind of thing happening, it was common many, many moons ago. And it’s still quite common for murder victims to be kissed, touched, and spoken to by loved ones in a morgue. And while I haven’t read Colorado’s Mortuary Science Code since the overhaul in ’06 (or so), it was legal to take a body you had rights to to that point. Probably still is. Colorado also has weird burial laws, or a stunning lack of them.

              Sorry about your brother.

            2. Perhaps this grieving family did show some poor taste and judgment at a time of intense grief.  That in my mind is more understandable, and certainly more forgivable, than the poor taste and judgment of anyone who would try to make an issue out of this matter.

        2. I’ve heard from many people it is harder to lose a child than a parent, and losing my Dad last year was the hardest thing I’ve ever been through. I can’t even imagine the anguish, and would completely understand if someone lost their sanity temporarily under the circumstances.

  2. “America as you know it, as you were given it by your parents and grandparents “

    right here.

My grandmother died in childbirth with her fifth child…her oldest was six.  She died in your state of Pennsylvania.  You bring your wagon to Colorado and I will be in the audience and I will tell the story of  your “America as you want it.”
