Trumpalooza! Protests Rock Downtown Denver as Trump Speaks

UPDATE #2: CBS4’s Shaun Boyd, ouch–Trump couldn’t even fill the room:

—–

UPDATE: A pro-Trump rally at 1PM on the West Steps of the Colorado Capitol appears to have fizzled:

—–

Donald Trump.
Donald Trump.

Lots of coverage coming in from the scene around the Western Conservative Summit at the Colorado Convention Center today, where GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump addressed the conservative faithful while protesters and Trump supporters mixed it up outside. CBS4 Denver:

Law enforcement worked to control protesters in downtown Denver outside a conference featuring Donald Trump on Friday. Three people were arrested after clashes between protesters and supporters.

Protesters began gathering outside the Colorado Convention Center early Friday morning, where Donald Trump was scheduled to speak at 10:30 a.m. at the Western Conservative Summit.

By 11 a.m., protesters were seen fighting at 14th Street and California Street. Three people were arrested and SWAT teams from the Denver Police Department and the Denver Sheriff Department moved in to the crowd.

The Denver Post’s Jesse Paul reports:

Outside of the scuffle, Trump supporters and a much larger contingent of opponents mostly kept to fierce yelling matches, which included name calling and profanity, and that were monitored by police.

Carlee Flanagan, a 19-year-old University of Colorado Boulder student, arrived with her mother and two 14-year-old sisters before 9 a.m. She held a DUMP TRUMP poster decorated with poop emojis.

“I think we all feel that Donald Trump is an embarrassment to our country,” Flanagan said. “He’s a racist. He’s a bigot.”

Pro and anti-Trump protesters mingle.
Pro and anti-Trump protesters mingle.

Inside, the Post’s John Frank reports on Trump’s “rambling” speech–an attempt to smooth over rocky relations with Colorado Republicans who rejected Trump during the delegate hunt:

Trump opened his rambling 50-minute speech addressing the elephant in the room: his blistering attack on the state’s Republican Party’s delegate selection process. But he didn’t retreat from his criticism, referencing his loss in Colorado as many as four times.

“It’s alright,” he told a half empty ballroom at the Denver Convention Center. “It worked out. In the end, it doesn’t matter. Here we are.”

…Earlier in the day, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin eviscerated the “never Trump” crowd plotting against the billionaire businessman. “I just call them Republicans Against Trump, or RAT for short,” she said to big applause. [Pols emphasis]

Did Trump with special guest star Sarah Palin manage to placate Colorado’s party faithful? Was Trump’s appearance at the Western Conservative Summit worth the negative spectacle of protests outside, which is now an indelible part of the story?

“In the end, it doesn’t matter. Here we are.”

That actually may be the whole answer right there.

  1. Anybody who was on scene reporting the numbers? I'm getting the feeling the protests (anti-Trump) didn't amount to nearly as much as predicted. Wait, I see it says a couple hundred including both supporting and anti. Pretty pathetic showing.

    1. Totally support the anti-Trump crowd, but ya gotta admit that the best line of the day belonged to someone teasing the folks building the wall:

"See? Trump got them to build a wall – and pay for it!"

  2. there's serious anti-Trump media here in CO, 99.9% radio. Ppl may pretend it doesn't exist.

    It does.

And the local callers are Adam Ant-ly against Trump and for their Puritan picks like Cruz, Glenn, etc……..

  3. Plus they had Sarah Palin speak first to warm up the crowd.  What red blooded Republican wouldn't want to be part of history in the making?

  4. Sarah Palin referring to Mitt Romney, Eric Erickson, Lindsey Graham, Ben Sasse, and a ton of other influential Republicans – and even her old boss John McCain – as "RATs" isn't exactly the way to rally the party around Trump. She's so stupid it hurts.

  5. Poor Trump. I wondered what bothered him more? The half empty house, the small number of protesters or the even smaller number of supportive counter-protesters.

  6. My favorite part was the emcee of the event (I forgot his name) warning people inside about the crazy, violent protestors outside and telling them they should stay inside for their own safety.

Only 3 people were arrested outside the convention center; two men who attempted to fight each other and a woman who was burning incense. That was all the violence.

GOP are so good at fearmongering they don't even give it a second thought anymore.

  7. Event planning 101 says you don't set up more chairs than the people you expect. Anyone know if some OTHER speaker attracted a full house from the Western Conservative Summit?

      1. Specifically in the Republican Party and generally in politics and  commerce, the truth was left lying face down in a ditch long ago.

  8. Photo by Stuart Sipkin, at yesterday's Trump rally. Classic photo with Charlie Watkins (in Black Lives Matter shirt) via Facebook feed of Patsy Hathaway, who wrote wonderful commentary on the Trump rally and protest.

V, you still want to declaim about how hate-filled all the Bernie supporters at the Trump rallies are?

    1. Forgive me mama. I'm not V but I am wondering what one thing has to do with the other. Ass hole supporters of one kind prove there aren't ass hole supporters of another kind or what?

      1. Of course not. And, once again, never claimed that.

What struck me about this photo was the pure venom in the Trumper woman's face. Scary stuff.

          1. Oh, please.  Hate in America didn't begin with Trump, as I'm sure Goodman, Cheney and Schwerner could attest, along with thousands of lesser known lynching victims.  Colorado once had a governor and legislature dominated by the Ku Klux Klan.  Trump is a hate monger, but he didn't originate the genre.

        1. I just wondered, mama, because you connected it with V saying something about hate filled Bernie supporters. I don't see why you'd do that if you weren't meaning to imply that this has something to do with that. But never mind. I probably wouldn't understand the thought process that got you from the one to the other even if you explained it to me.

    2. I don't recall saying ALL bernie protestors at Trump rallies were hate-filled.   It was your assertion that each and every one was the re-incarnation of Mohandas k. Gandhi that seemed debatable in view of the police reports.

        1. Sheesh, you guys, put down the energy drinks and back away from the keyboard.  I love Bernie and support Hillary and it is now past time for you both to chill.  We can all unite against Trump and Glenn and my personal bugaboos, the Coffman twins.

          1. On June 23, 2016, Voyageur wrote:

And, of course, no sanders supporter has ever gotten out of line, ever.  Those people egged at the Trump rallies and beaten up were attacked by buddhist monks

            and

Obviously, Fox fabricated all those "Fuck Trump" signs, threw the eggs and beat up the Trump supporters all to boost ratings.   Got it.   "Fuck Trump" is such an eloquent argument to win the hearts of the middle class, got it.  So how come I saw the same goons in New York and New Mexico on MSNBC?

Clearly, you implied here that the "eggers" were Bernie supporters. Also that "Fuck Trump" is a political slogan to win the hearts of the middle class, instead of an inarticulate expression of rage at racism and a plan to deport people's families.

So that's the answer to your question. You still haven't answered mine: When did I supposedly assert that "each and every one was the reincarnation of Mohandas K Gandhi"?

Sorry, ex-lurker. V just can't help himself from posting bullshit straw men arguments for others,  and I just can't stop myself from calling him on it. When I have the time, which I do tonight, the other large entertainment in town consisting of sheep wrestling or mutton bustin'  at the town rodeo.

I'll check out the mutton bustin' tomorrow, and fireworks Monday though, so V's straw men shall remain untoppled.

            1. Your hypocrisy is disgustiing and apparent to anyone who actually reads what I said.  Only you would think " Fuck Trump" is deliberately designed to appeal to the middle class.  I was criticizing your beloved goons for alienating the middle class with violent and obscene tactics which you continue to celebrate.  I think you are finally just unhinged.  And buy a clue _ the Gandhi reference is satirical about your continued apologia for violent and abusive behaviour.  S a t I r e .  Look it up!

              1. V, there is just no way to reason with someone who uses statements that so clearly mean that some people who support Bernie engage in abhorrent, counter-productive behavior, that not all Bernie supporters are superior beings, to prove that you have said that all Bernie supporters are "filled with hate". Logic simply doesn't apply in any alternate universe in which that sort of "reasoning" would pass for "proof".

Be glad you don't get it. There would be something wrong with you if you did.

                1. You're right as usual, bc.  Every now and then, she just comes up with something like this.  Happily, while I didn't attend theDenver protests, they seem to have been restrained and effective. Now can we move on to the next issue — sending bill clinton on a six month fact finding tour of the South Pole?

              2. I did look up "unhinged", V. Your picture illustrates the definition. Satire? No. It's just your usual tactic: appeal to extremes:  blow something up completely out of proportion, then ridicule it. Which is what you've done here. For the record, only you said that "Fuck Trump" was any kind of "strategy", let alone one appealing to the middle class. That's your ridiculous statement, not mine.  But I get that you will never, ever, admit that you engage in this rhetorical distraction and deception

BC just butted in because she likes to pick fights with me, usually for what she imagines that I believe. She doesn't ask me what I think, she tells me, then ridicules her imaginary antagonist's thoughts.  She'll manage to get in a reference to black helicopters somehow, eventually. I try not to engage her, but she will persist.

As far as "apologia for violent and unhinged behavior", V, I question why you always manage to justify the bad behavior of Hillary or Trump supporters, like the elderly delegate who struck a young "Millenials for Bernie" protester, Moumita Ahmed, in New York. That incident, at about 4:30 in the video, could have been avoided if the moderators simply had allowed the young woman to speak, and not cut off her mike.  Foreshadowing Philadelphia, I fear.

Or you justify the behavior of this particular Trump supporter raging at the BLM folks in Denver. Clearly she's "unhinged", and the young couple she's screaming at are behaving with commendable (Gandhi and MLK-like) restraint. Yet, you distract by saying that hate has always existed, like it's no big problem. Somehow, it must be all the fault of the Bernistas, as your 6/23 posts implied.

Reasonable people could agree that there are bullies in all political groups and associations, and that reasonable people should condemn this behavior. Agreeing to that reasonable assertion does not mean that we ignore or condone abusive behavior, whether it comes from some protester throwing eggs on a Trump provocateur,  an old guy frustrated with a Bernista who refuses to be silenced, or a Trump supporter screaming into a black person's face on a Denver street.

I suppose you will call this my  "sticking up for my beloved goons".   Because you refuse, in spite of my many explanations, to understand that there is a spontaneous grassroots anti-racist movement against Donald Trump. Not every young black or brown person who marches in a protest will be as calm and nonviolent as the couple in the picture I showed. For those who are not, who throw eggs, or get in fights with Trumpers, or shout obscenities – your refusal to understand their rage and insist on calling them  "goons" or "thugs" exacerbates their alienation, and the problem. It is possible to condemn behavior while understanding the person and the motivation for the behavior.

So, ex-lurker, I understand that your call to "step away from the keyboard" is aimed at silencing me. V and BC are on here all day, every day, and often insult or ridicule Sanders supporters, or anti-Trump protesters, yet you never ask them to stop doing so, or to "calm down".

So….Sure. I'll shut up, and we'll all pretend that we're one big happy Democratic family. No one is ever silenced, no microphones are cut off,  regular rules of order apply to everyone impartially, all votes are counted, all delegates are allowed on the floor, no credentials are ever "lost in the system",  no old white dudes ever smack young brown women for being too "uppity".

We'll pretend that the DNC, now ruled by corporate lobbyists, has not passed a  regressive platform in spite of the wishes of the Sanders delegates and a stated objective to "unify the party". We'll pretend that there is no ideological divide within the Democratic party, or that  the people who dissent are just "beloved goons" who deserve nothing but contempt.  We'll look at crowds of people of color protesting Trump's racism and stated plans to deport and imprison their families, and shake our heads at how unruly the protesters are.

Damn right, we're all unruly. The policy divisions are real. The abusive behaviors are real. I will comply with exlurker's request, and allow BC and V to continue to rule this board without much challenge to their ideas. Civil debate and discourse is clearly impossible on this board where insults, faux mind reading,  and straw men fallacies are the norm.  Silence does not equal consent – silence equals quashed dissent, in this case. But I’m sure you’ll be content with silence, and count it a victory for your side.
I still have diaries waiting to be written, but will give up commenting to BC and V’s posts on here, no matter how much baiting (not debating) is directed at me.

                1. Great words, mama. I hope you won't include me in your boycott. I, too kinda gave up on butting heads with some folks on this blog, as it is, indeed, an exercise in futility.

But, to me, you are a hero and an inspiration…

                  just sayin'

                  1. Let's be clear about one thing, mj.  If you are ever indicted for brevity, you'll be aquitted!  Frankly, I think you were drunk when you wrote these incoherent fulminations.

                  2. Thanks, Duke. And back atcha. You've been fighting the good fight a long time, and are effective at it.

No, I'll comment with others on here, just won't engage with those two. There's no real discourse or dialogue possible – they're too busy fencing with their imaginary opponents, and blasting away the ludicrous arguments of these ignorant phantasms. I'll leave them to it.

The real me, my actual ideas, arguments in writing, aren't even a blip on their radar, so I'll quit trying to bleep that blip, including not putting up any further provocations of my own.

In brighter news, I was at the Aurora main library on Friday, and two young Latina volunteers from Mi Familia Vota tried to register me to vote!

They were so idealistic and adorable. I'm already registered, but congratulated and thanked them for their work.

                  3. If you're including me in the "great words" as someone who constantly attacks and insults Bernie supporters I'm very disappointed, Duke. My posts are actually full of praise for what Bernie and his movement have done for both my party and my country.

If my recognizing that neither Bernie nor 100% of his followers are above any criticism ever or  that criticizing the Or Busters who plan to refuse to join Sanders and Warren (and I've said repeatedly that doesn't include mama) in voting for HRC  to give aid and comfort to Team Trump  is your idea of abusiveness, so be it.

If my noting it when mama points to theories of fraudulent tricks to explain away HRC outperforming Sanders in various contests is your idea of claiming mind reading skills or employing straw man tactics, so be it.

If you too have missed the many times I have argued with V over his HRC can do no wrong attitude or his harshness in painting Sanders supporters with a broad brush, well, that's disappointing too.

Sorry you feel that way but I make no apologies, especially for finding some of mama's "great words" pretty irrational and hysterical.

                    1. If you're including me in the "great words" as someone who constantly attacks and insults Bernie supporters I'm very disappointed, Duke.

                      No ma'am, I am not…smiley

                2. I don't want you to shut up, MJ, I want you and Vger to calm down.  Type all you want.  Attack each other if you must.  I'm just hoping for unity against a very specific set of enemies who want to shove Amurica the Kinda Great down the rabbit hole England just vanished into.

                  1. ex lurker, thanks for that. So far, you haven't  attributed statements or absurd ideas to me that aren't mine, so I'll continue to dialogue with you, or anyone else who communicates directly, honestly, and without trying to drag in the kitchen sink or the black helicopters.

You may have noticed that it isn't possible to "calm down" with Vger. He goes from 0 to outraged in .001 seconds. Best for me just to leave him alone.

As far as true Kumbayah Democratic unity, that is a pipe dream, I'm afraid. The divisions in policy are too wide, and the distrust on both sides of the progressive /centrist Sanders / Clinton camps is too deep.

We can agree to register voters, make sure every vote is counted,  vote blue no matter who, and keep calling out Trump. In my opinion, that's all the Democratic unity possible. The Philly Dem convention is going to look a lot like the New York and Nevada conventions – lots of backstage skullduggery, suppression of dissent, gravitation to a centrist corporate-approved politics while giving lip service to progressive ideals, unequal application of rules, plenty of civil and not-so-civil protests. Not much Kumbayah singing at all.

        1. Especially the neo-Nazis who no doubt consider it a signal that he's really on their side. Although the daughter who's an observant convert to Judaism makes it all kind of confusing. But neither Trump nor his fans are exactly famous for coherence.

        2. Mom had to wear a star (because of her "tainted Jewish blood", not her actual religion) when Hitler took over  Austria. She would have understood the intent of that ad very well.

  9. It is totally anti-semetic, and I think I've had enough years of hebrew school to earn the right to make the call. Regardless, I am hardly alone in the assessment; there was so much push back that Trump has now re-run the image using a circle instead of the Star of David. When Trump admits he has gone too far, it is not a marginal case.

    1. Maybe you should have spent less time in Hebrew school and more watching

"Gun smoke"   The six point star is called the "sheriff's star" and is still commonly used for law enforcement.   When I goggle sheriff's star, I got 12 of 15 as six point stars.   The text explains that 6 points–two triangles– was a lot easier to make than five, which accounts for its popularity.   The association with law enforcement also explains why it would be used in an ad attacking Hillary for corruption.   To buy your theory, I have to assume that Trump deliberately wanted to offend Jewish voters.   Why would he do that?  And I will give you a thousand dollars if you can show me where he "admits he has gone too far."  No doubt you weren't the only one jumping to the conclusion so his team changed it to avoid confusion.  A false charge of anti-semitism such as you made only desensitizes people toward real anti-semitism.  It's like claiming anyone who criticizes Israeli policy is anti-semitic.

      https://www.123rf.com/stock-photo/sheriff_star.html

      1. There’s a new sheriff in town . . .

All I really needed to know I learned from Mel Brooks!

        . . . but I agree, Drumpf's six-pointed star isn't anti-Semitic, it's just stupid and insensitive.

        1. "stupid and insensitive," which defines so much of the Trump campaign. As an aside, I'm proud to be a RAT, as Sarah Palin put it (Republican Against Trump).

      2. Not sure what you mean by the Gun Smoke v Hebrew School crack, V, but our family did both. In fact I was allowed to stay up late to watch Gun Smoke.  There's an article at Huffpost that has a ton of people disagreeing with your take but the single most telling bit of info is the original source sited in this update. I don't think these folks had Gun Smoke in mind.

UPDATE: July 3 — Mic News reported that the image Trump used was previously shared on a website used by neo-Nazis and anti-Semites. The site said the image appeared on an entry posted around June 22, more than a week before Trump’s team tweeted it.

        http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/donald-trump-hillary-clinton_us_5777e61fe4b09b4c43c0afb4

        1. The Huffington Post is not a credible source fot anything relating to Donald Trump, BC.   Again, the question is why Trump would deliberately tryr  to alienate Jewish voters.  Stupidity and insensitivity are far better explanations for his conduct than anti-semitism.

            1. Climb down from the balcony!  I never heard of the Mic News and it doesn't seem like I missed much.  You need to log on Amazon and search for luggage — so you can get a grip!  There, I said it.

          1. No that's not the question.

Do you dispute that the quotes used in the article are accurate? Do you dispute the original source of the meme? Do you dispute what such a source would have in mind by the use of that symbol? Do you dispute that, regardless of Trump's family situation he has consistently attracted the support of white supremacists, neo-Nazis and the KKK and that he has gone to great lengths to avoid disavowing that support and in fact welcomed it and winked at it?

            Those are the questions.

It doesn't matter at all whether he is personally anti-Semitic or not, whether he's stupid to risk alienating Jewish voters or not (he may well be aware that the overwhelming majority of Jewish voters would never vote for him anyway while the overwhelming majority of hard core racists and bigots will), whether he's racist or not, bigoted or not.

If he is only cynically taking advantage of the anti-Semitism, racism and bigotry of others that's not just as bad. It's worse. And if neutrality aids and abets racial, ethnic and religious hatred, how much more so does Trump's wink, wink encouragement of it? The objects of that hatred don't much care about whether those who aid and abet believe it themselves or not or even if they're just clueless as that has no effect on the result.

Furthermore you can take your crack about Hebrew School and Gun Smoke and insert it where the moon don't shine, buddy.

            1. it was take back the house who brought Hebrew school into the debate.   Why he thought that was relevant, you'd have to ask him. Gun smoke featured the sheriff's star, a six pointed symbol of law enforcement.

              1. Star of David.  Background pile of money.  Hillary Clinton's face. Implication bought and paid for by Jews.  Antisemitic white supremacist group posted it.  TrumpstaDumpsta re-posted it.  This is not a giant leap.  Antisemitism at its finest.  Why would he do that?  He's that stoooooopid.

              2. I was already clear on both points when I advised you on where you could store that particular bon mot, V.  You aren't the only one aware of the 6 pointed sheriff's star although Marshall Dillon was Marshall Dillon but that's neither here nor there.

I always feel so vindicated and, yes, pleasantly self satisfied when both mama and you are pissed off at me at the same time. devil

          2. tl;dr What BlueCat said.

Trump doesn't strike me as the type to organize a KKK rally. He does strike me as an ignorant gas-bag who is more than willing to overlook the hate spewed by some of his supporters because "they're nice people and he knows nice people. They're nice and they win. I don't know why their bonfires look like crosses!" or some other stupid ass Trumpism.

      1. <sarcarsm>Yes. That. Is. Exactly. Right.</sarcarsm>

No! But a Nazi who hates Hillary and hates Jews would certainly put the two together and put it up on a neo-Nazi message so they can do all their hating all at once. WTF kind of question is that?

      2. No, V. But this Star of David meme created by white supremacists has the meaning everyone but you is recognizing in it as proved by the context of its origin. You know. Being created by white supremacists?

Your criticism of us silly people who don't know that a sheriff's star also is six pointed and obviously it makes more sense, silly people, that that is the intended meaning since Trump couldn't be an anti-Semite (so what if he's not?) is all wet. It is clearly a group of bigots' anti-Semitic meme whether Trump is too stupid to see it or too cynical to admit it.

In your case I'd replace "stupid" with "contrary, stubborn and curmudgeonly".

Here's the thing. You are mistaken. Clearly. It means exactly what everybody but you sees that it means. You're wrong. It happens, V.

I don't expect you to admit it because of the whole contrary, stubborn curmudgeonly thing. Rock on.

Wonder who else I can piss off today.

  10. It looks like the Trump campaign retweeted the meme with no anti-semitic intent and quickly changed it when the anti-semitism charge was raised.   Ari Fletcher nailed it:

Ari Fleischer, a Jewish Republican who served as press secretary to former President George W. Bush, criticized the Trump campaign for the tweet.

“I suspect this was a case of stupidity and not malice, but no matter what, his campaign keeps making foolish mistakes,” he said. “It would be nice to make it through a 3-day weekend without his campaign hurting itself.”

Trump adviser Roger Stone sent an email to HuffPost several hours after this article was posted, with the subject line: Total Horseshit.

“A sheriff badge is the same shape as the Star of David,” Stone wrote. “You should be ashamed to publish crap like this – but then you don’t work for a real news organization.”

[FYI, every single article about Trump on Huffington Post is required to end with the following attack:]

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

[Yes, that alone disqualifies HUFFpo from being considered a reliable news source on the subject of Donald Trump.]

    1. If you want to get technical about star shapes, sheriff badges have rounded points. That's a stupid reply by Stone.

I agree it was probably stupidity and not malice but Trump's repeated stupidity is emboldening neo-Nazi fucksticks and it needs to stop.

What in that statement by HuffPo is untrue?

        1. I asked…what about that statement was untrue?

Wanna put on your big boy pants, and answer the question, or are you just going to keep wildly gesturing in another (ANY other) direction?

    3. What Ari Fleischer nailed is that the meme, whether he thinks Trump was aware of it or not, is anti-Semitic and is sourced from an anti-Semitic group just as we've been saying and you've been denying.

Those of us who recognized it for what it is are not the ones who got it wrong, Gun Smoke notwithstanding. Remember you didn't just say Trump didn't mean it to be anti-Semitic. You accused us in the most disdainful terms of jumping to silly conclusions in claiming that imagery of the meme is anti-Semitic.

It is. That was the intention of those who created it. We were right. You were wrong. Period. Like I said. It happens.

    4. [Yes, that alone disqualifies HUFFpo from being considered a reliable news source on the subject of Donald Trump.]

You'd think it would disqualify Trump from being a candidate, but I digress.
